I love the sweater but I hate knitting. I’ve decided that while it is better to knit to make sweaters, crocheting is ten times better. When you crochet, you don’t have to worry about how your sweater barely fits on the needle. Ugh. This sweater is made in one piece then sewn together and I have to idea how the fuck that will work. I stopped following the instructions like the second after I learned how to do the pattern. I’m supposed to leave a hole for the head sometime soon. That’ll be a blast to figure out. Why can’t this damn thing knit itself?
Yeah, I just ranted about knitting. Come at me bro.

id try bending him around your leg on a circle ( but dont hold him up) so he will respect your leg when u put it on and reach further under.
oaksnidget answered your question: Need help from my equestrian friends:
lateral work (leg yields, shoulder-ins, etc.) and shortening/lengthening strides at both trot and canter. good luck! :)

i dunno if this will help at all but the way i always think of it is pushing them with your legs up into that steady contact will work
Thank you guys so much for the advice!! I tried all of them (minus the lateral work since the trainer had told me not to without her present), and he was great today. Focused a lot on leg contact, circles and striding. Found the circles so helpful to get him under himself even while keeping my hands soft; especially benefited him on that left lead canter! Still needs work but if we can keep it up, I’m sure he’ll get better. :) Thanks again!
